GPS monitoring is essentially a tracking system that use satellites communicating with a GPS device back on earth. The system is famous for its accuracy in giving out precise location readings. The technology of GPS was first employed by the United States Department of Defense and was originally referred to as Navigation System with Timing and Ranging or NAVSTAR. For the military, this was a very efficient method of navigation regardless of the weather condition and time.
It was in the year 200 when the system’s selective availability was deactivated opened doors for virtually limitless civilian use. From then on, GPS devices and GPS monitoring have been an integral part of the daily lives of countless people around the world.
The Birth of GPS and GPS Monitoring in the Contemporary World
GPS, an acronym for Global Positioning System was actually a brainchild of Dr. Ivan Getting; a New Yorker who after serving as Raytheon Corporation’s vice president for engineering and research, proposed to come up with a state-of-the-art methods of navigational technology in 1960. This proposal is considered to be the start of the concept of GPS – a way to track fast moving vehicles – which we now call GPS monitoring.

In the early years of the 1980’s though, the financial status of the project dealing with the GSP system became so critical and an unexpected turn of event – a civilian flight of Korean Airline got lost over the Soviet territory – finally paved the way for the system to be available for use in civilians.

Nowadays, GPS tracking can be employed into almost any use that call for accurate monitoring. Unlike the ones that are installed in vehicles to tell the driver to take the next turn, GPS devices are now being used to monitor movements – authorized or not – made by people being watched by the criminal justice system.
Presently, twelve sates in the United States have legalized a law that permits the judiciary to use GPS tracking devices on offenders regarding domestic abuse. What the device does is it allows enforcers of the law track the movements of the offender and give victims a heads-up warning in the event that the offender comes to a close proximity from the victim. This in essence, gives the victim the opportunity to take necessary precautions.
Monitoring GPS
Another point why law enforcing agencies are turning to GPS tracking for law offenders is its cost-effectiveness. Some inmates whose crime risk are classified to be considerably law no longer have to stay inside jails to serve the whole duration of their sentence; now they can be sent out from the cells provided that they are monitored through GPS.
On the other hand, while many people will be relieved by the use of GPS to monitor law offenders’ movements, there are questions of this practice as violating people’s privacy. There re sectors that say people who had issues with the law still have the rights to move about to live their lives. It is claimed that limiting the movements of offenders to freely do his or her way of living that are beyond the set parameters of the law is unjust. Debates regarding this matter are still going on until now.
GPS Monitoring – Tracking the Future
Now that we are far from the time when only the military holds the monopoly in GPS use, people continue to find ways to use this technology for the betterment of living their lives. Technology, although not always, ought to be used for the good of man and not for the destruction of lives. We now enjoy a tracking system that not only gives us the opportunity to do better business, a more fun way of seeing the world, and an improved way of protecting ourselves and our investments. This advancement although very useful can also be abused so the key is to balance the use of the system for the purpose not to defeat itself; one thing is certain though, GPS monitoring system is still young and we might be seeing just the tip of the iceberg.
